Former Kenyan refugee becomes America's first Somali-American Muslim Woman Legislator

Ilhan Omar, who spent four years as a Kenyan refugee, has made history in the US by becoming the first Somalia-American Muslim woman Legislator at the election that took place at Minnesota on Tuesday.

The 34 year former refugee traveled to the US at the age of 12 after fleeing the Somali civil war.

Speaking after her remarkable victory, Omar who was representing the District 60B in Minneapolis said:

‘It’s the beginning of something new. This district has a legacy of making history. I am excited for our progressive values and to be able to be on the ground at the Capitol representing the diverse people of my district and being a champion with them and for them.’
